so, this weekend, we decided to partake in a little pre-halloween fun… last year, we did some research and came upon a haunted forest in maryland – markoff’s. after reading more about it, we found out that it’s actually one of the top haunted forests in the area. who knew?! anyway, we went and had such a blast that we decided to venture out there again this year. since we now live in virginia, it was definitely a bit of a trek, to say the least. we first went to a corn maze that was closeby to get us in the halloween spirit….and pretty much cheated our way through it (though we obviously were not the only ones to create our own paths through the corn stalks). then, instead of taking the long route to markoff’s, we decided to follow the GPS and took the supposedly “short” route. little did we know… after driving on a dirt, country road for about 5 minutes, we saw a huge line of cars. given that neither of us is very patient when it comes to waiting in line, we waited for about 5 minutes, then figured there had to be an accident, turned around, and tried to find another route. but the GPS kept trying to force us to take the original route…. clearly, there was no other way to get there.
so, finally, we ended up back in line with all the other cars…and waited. you could tell everyone else was antsy too. the kids were getting in and out of the cars, playing music, racing up and down the road. then, after about 30 minutes, we realized that there was some kind of body of water that we had to cross (which turned out to be the potomac, of course) and THAT’s what was holding us up….for the love. and, oh, there wasn’t even a bridge, which would make sense. there was a makeshift ferry that was taking 15 cars across at a time. and it was taking about 10 minutes per trip…which made matters even worse. i worked in belize for a while and they had very similar makeshift car ferries that would cross rivers, that were amazingly pulled by one man. but this was in the middle of virginia! so, why couldn’t they have constructed a bridge? it’s not like that part of the potomac is particularly wide. apparently it was historic (it’s called white’s ferry, if you’re inverested in an adventure). anyway, to make a long story short, after waiting for about an hour (by this time, we had waited a good hour and a half), we finally made it across the water…and arrived at the haunted forest at 10pm. it was just as much fun as last year, but absolutely freezing!
so, if you plan on heading out for a little spooky fun this halloween and live in the washington, DC metro area, i highly suggest that you visit this haunt…..and definitely bring a parka if you’ll be there late.
