It’s that time of the four year cycle when you can smell in the air that there is something bigger than Superbowl or World Cup Cricket. There is an excitement and anticipation in the air. I somehow am more excited than I have ever been for an event, maybe it’s the build up for so many months. It’s that feeling of unknown and all the spins by the pundits.
I can’t stop myself thinking about what does an election mean to a common person, how does he or she get affected by this? Are the issues made bigger than they are? Is the hype taking over the facts? To a common American election means figuring out answers to multiple questions:
- how to get to the election center?
- how long are the lines?
- can I afford to take a day off?
- would my employer understand if I am late to work?
- lastly is it worth the effort?
There is a feeling among people that I don’t get affected by the elections so I am not going to go and vote. I also don’t understand the logic behind election centers open from 7AM to 7PM. I can name so many people who leave their homes before 7AM and don’t return back till 7PM. How are these people supposed to vote? Shouldn’t there be a 24hr window during which people could vote?
The fact of the matter is that elections still get decided by how many people come out and vote. It does not matter what the polls say or how much the pundits get paid, it only matter if you and me get up on the election day morning and go out and vote. It is our civil duty and we will abide by that (no matter if the people we elect don’t abide by theirs). Maybe one day someone will realize and get rid of the word “Political Ambition”. For now we still have to go and vote.
GO VOTE!
cheers.
