We are still not there but we are getting there. Yesterday at macworld apple announced that they would start hosting 8million songs DRM(Digital Rights Management) free. What this means is going forward if you download DRM free song from iTunes then you can play that song on any media device. There is no copy protection on those songs. Not only this but these songs will be at 256 Kbps instead of current 128 Kbps. You won’t be able to tell the difference on regular generic speakars but in reality they would be of higher quality.
If you have been using iTunes for sometime now then you can go to iTunes right now and upgrade all your songs to DRM free versions for $0.30 each. The new tier pricing from apple is $0.69, $0.89 and $1.29. So by paying $0.30 per song to upgrade you are actually paying the difference. For hardcore music lovers this is like the best Christmas gift one could ask for.
Though I was looking for a new iMac to be announced but I am still happy with this little after Christmas surprise.
