First impression iPhone 3.0 OS …

apple-30-osI was able to install iPhone 3.0 OS last night (don’t ask me where I got it from, but it was simple enough to get). I backed up my iPhone before starting just in case the stars didn’t align or the planets were not in my favor. I started restoring the 3.0 OS. It probably took 10 minutes for the upgrade and then another 30 min to restore the data from backup and sync. There are two files available online one is for iPhone 3G and one is for original iPhone 2G or edge (whatever you want to call it).

Once upgraded you won’t notice any big change to the screen few things which I noticed were:

  • Icon for SMS has changed
  • New icon for Voice Memo
  • Spotlight if you try to go beyond home screen

there are no other changes which you can notice right away.

Spotlight – My favourite feature so far.  It searches the iPhone for everything. As soon as you start typing it shows you the search results which goes across emails, music, app etc. I love the feature. Once you have too many apps on your phone then this feature comes handy.

Voice Memo – it is great but nothing out of the ordinary. You can record a memo, truncate it, categorize it and then email it.

Cut Copy Paste – Works great and it is very handy but I think I have gotten used to living without it, but I can see it growing on me as time passes

Landscape Keyboard – Another great feature but another which I have learn to live without. You see where I am getting there are new features but nothing which tops the chart besides spotlight for an average Joe.

Buy movie and  TV shows – I am not sure what can one download with 10MB limit on while on 3G network. You need to have wifi to download a movie.

MMS – MMS support is coming in late summer ATT has to build some more muscle.

That’s about it for the main features. Still worth the upgrade. Officially coming out next Wednesday June 17th.

Rob C - So this is what all the hubba-ba-loo has been about the last couple of weeks? No tethering, no video recording, no MMS, no native file syncing, no bluetooth stereo headsets or keyboards……….
Guess I will wait a bit longer for an upgrade.
