Like many others around the country, we started out the morning bright and early with a variation of the Trot for Hunger. The DC race supported S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat), a nonprofit in Washington that helps the homeless through a variety of services. Not to sound to cliche, but it really is nice to give back, whether indirectly or not, on Thanksgiving. The run was short, but very cold and damp. I’ve never seen so much fog out here! Well, since moving to the East Coast from northern California where the fog seems to magically swallow up the cities on a daily basis.

After the race, we headed back home to tend to the turkey. Who knew that brining would really do the trick? I guess it’s all about keeping the moisture in. We used Alton Brown’s recipe, which was exact, scientific, and delicious! Yet another hail to the Food Network. We started brining the turkey the night before, which means it was soaking in ice and spices for over 15 hours…in a cooler. Don’t ask. A bit OCD, a bit weird, but totally worth it in the end. We brought the uncooked turkey to Gaurav’s cousin’s house in McLean for our standard family feast and ended up roasting it for almost 3 hours. Quite shockingly (it was our very first turkey!), it turned out just fine. We spent the rest of the day enjoying way too much food and even more wine with the family. Definitely a good time.

The day after Thanksgiving, we indulged in some Black Friday shopping. Which, sadly enough, didn’t involve any Black Friday-ish deals. How could it be? What’s up with sales on sale items? I mean, 20% off should apply to those things we wouldn’t normally be able to afford. Very disappointing. Anyway, we ended up with a pair of overly priced J.Crew knee-high boots and a Mac Mini. And, no, neither was on sale. But, of course, we got caught up in the usual post-turkey consumeritis and felt the need to participate in what has become a thrilling late November tradition.
The left over turkey ended up as a turkey stew with some awesome rice
This is how I felt this weekend, heading up to the bedroom

Happy belated Thanksgiving to all. Peace.
