Small Adventures In A Very Big Brazil

Before WPPI, I headed down south for a brief, but hectic trip to Brazil.  I actually visited the Brazilian Amazon several years ago, which was awesome, but had never seen any of the major cities.  We spent a week in Sao Paulo, which is basically the financial center of the country.  A bit chaotic with way too much traffic (apparently the city has more heliports on its roofs per square meter than any other city in the world…not at all shocking).  But it’s still a beautiful, culturally diverse city.  The food is delicious, though, if you’re not into meat, you’re out of luck.  It’s like Anthony Bourdain meets Andrew Zimmern meets Man vs. Food.  And then some BBQ Paradise thrown in.  Note the blatant obsession with The Travel Channel and The Food Network once again.  Always a recurring theme.  At least their fruit is seriously to die for.  Pineapple!!!!!!  Oh, and they seem to really like their futbol.  Go figure.  Ha! We made it to a match between two of the local Sao Paulo teams.  Madness.  Chaos.  Excitement.  Passion.  Lazy Ronaldo.  But Ronaldo nonetheless!  Anyway, I hope to go back someday and visit Rio, Salvador, and Bahia.  Such a large country, so much to see, and, as the adage goes, so very little tiempo.

P.S.1 – The last several pictures were taken at a local nonprofit, Meninos do Morumbi, founded by Brazilian musician/drummer, Flavio.  The organization is truly amazing and the band/dance troupe has been recognized on a global level.  Secretary Clinton had even visited with some of the kids, including the girl I was able to take a picture of, the day before.  This girl was such a performer…definitely going places!

P.S.2 – If you love Havaianas as much as I do, then Brazil is the place for you, mainly because they’re super cheap there…and, no, they’re not knock-offs.  I think I may have left the store with, oh, 5 pair of flip-flops.  Granted one was a gift for G who very sweetly informed me that they’re not only made in India and cost like 5 rupees there, but they consider them “shower shoes”.  I can definitely see that now that I’ve examined my bubble gum pink pair more closely.

Obrigado…oh wait, that means thanks.  Not sure how to say cheers.  I guess I’ll go with SAUDE!  Clink.
