La Belle France – Part I

Touch-down Paris!  No, not that type of TD.  Though, I was just saying that I’m excited for football season to begin.  NFL, that is.  Not vuvuzelas.  Ah, the World Cup!  Anyway, though it’s literally right across that great, big Atlantic, we opted for the DC – London – Paris – train (not the streamlined and super speedy TGV) to Brive – Marquay route.  And, it was 100% worth it.  Sometimes, it’s fun to take every possible mode of transportation to get somewhere.  Why do we all secretly yearn to be Anthony Bourdain?

My mom has owned a gorgeous farm in the south of France for over a decade now.  So, we decided to create our own (primarily culinary) adventure.  I had been several times, but this was G’s first time.  We arrived in Paris, I tried my hand at the French that I used to be fluent in and we figured out how to get from Charles de Gaulle Airport au Gare d’Austerlitz in Paris…where we caught a train down to Brive, a 1-hour car drive from my mom’s farm in what is known as the Dordogne.  Otherwise known as a real-life fairy tail.  “Man in the Iron Mask” and “Ever After” were filmed there for a reason.  From the rolling hills to the tobacco fields to the chateaux – Alain Dominique Perrin, of THE Cartier, has made taken over Lagrezette – to the winding rivers to the medieval towns like Sarlat and Montignac, the Perigord is truly magnificent.  We relaxed and ate and drank and explored.  Did I mention we ate and drank?  Trot, perhaps!

Below is a slideshow of our journey…itinerary covering, just to name a few: Sarlat, Cahors, Marquay, Beynac, and several other almost untouched corners of la France profonde. :)  Up next, the City of Lights!
