For the most part, sports, including running, are still pretty conservative from a gear and clothing perspective. And, I guess there’s good reason for that. When you’re about to be immersed in your own sweat for 2-4 hours, the last thing you want is to have to worry about looking super trendy. And, when it comes down to it, comfort should be much more important than style in the active world. The good news is both Adidas and Nike, through partnerships with well known designers, have recently launched new sporty lines, lines that are taking technical to a new kind of urban edge.
Nike x Undercover: We all know that Japan is the unofficial mecca of all things style and fashion. And, the Nike x Undercover Gyakusou concept is no exception to this unspoken rule. The collection, which emerged via a collaboration between designer Jun Takahashi and Nike, was released about a week ago and promises fabulously interesting things. He’s taken into consideration everything that a runner may need, including breathability, minimalism, and performance. And, the best part is Takahashi is an avid runner himself, often taking to the funky-sophisticated streets of Tokyo, so he understands the importance of functionality + appeal. Although the running community in the U.S. is probably not the easiest of sells since we’re, to put it diplomatically, a practical bunch, he may just be onto something.
adidas by Stella McCartney: Another recent addition to the world of designer running gear is Stella McCartney’s Adidas collection. Launched earlier this fall, she’s really pushing the envelope with her neon pieces. When I first saw the photos, I was totally intrigued. Yes, it’s slightly strange. I mean, who would even think to add a glow in the dark element to sports gear? It’s certainly much safer, but very much out there. Like, WAY out there. But, you gotta give her props. Like Takahashi’s designs, I’m not certain that this collection will catch on with the more serious runners out there; convention will likely trump edge. But, there’s still great potential – sporty-chic will win lots of women over, that’s for sure!
