A lot of people contact us because they’re interested in doing an engagement session in Washington, DC proper. We’ve done several in the DC metro area and really love it all. DC obviously has some wonderfully beautiful spots, primarily because of the history and glory that define the city. When it comes down to it, the spots for shooting are endless!
1. Monuments & Tidal Basin: When most people think of DC, including those who live in DC, they automatically think of all the monuments. Though tourists tend to flock to the monuments, pretty much throughout the year, the Washington Mall is still a great place to shoot your engagement. The structures are dramatic and provide a great backdrop. Lots of lines and shapes to work with. And, if there are a lot of people, we can easily blur them out. ![]()
2. Waterfront / Fish Market: When we lived in the city, one of our favorite spots was the fish market in Southwest DC. Not only is the food delicious (well, if you enjoy oysters), but it’s got fabulous character. The vibe is just very much like anything you would find in a market in South East Asia or Latin America. It’s rough around the edges, slightly chaotic, with various interesting river odors (the Potomac and Anacostia are right there). BUT, that’s why it’s special…and unique.
3. Rock Creek Park: DC-ites (is that what you call them?) are lucky to have Rock Creek Park, a sort of maze of green right smack in the middle of the city. There are small parks within the park, some waterfalls that we’ve actually shot before, and tons of trails, boulders, and just pure nature. I would suggest the park either in the spring when the leaves and trees are glistening due to the rains or in the fall…very colorful!
4. Adam’s Morgan: Much like the fish market, Adam’s Morgan has got character. We enjoy shooting there in our free time because it’s got cultural edge and the buildings each have a wonderful story behind them. It’s sort of the antithesis of the suit and tie, conservative DC that many people know. If you’re looking for texture, vibrant colors, and a certain urban feel, without pretension, Adam’s Morgan might just be the spot for you.
5. Georgetown: Ok, so I’m a bit partial to Georgetown because I got my Masters, and am now doing my MBA, there. But I digress. It really is one of the more beautiful neighborhoods in the city. Not only are the houses gorgeous, well, obviously, but there are lots of charming alleys, not to mention the cobblestone streets that represent a sort of European influence. And, of course, you can’t forget the Exorcist stairs!
Just remember, the more unusual the spot, the more creative we can be! -k
